Family Centropomidae - Sand Basses
Psammoperca waigiensis - Sand Bass

Distinguishing features
A medium sized silvery fish with a large eye and a narrow snout. Looks very similar to the coastal Barramundi which is a member of the same family. Maximum size about 45cm.
Locations
Seen in most bays of the island near coral reefs.
Habitat Preferences
Found near areas of live coral with sargassum weed and caves.
Biology & Ecology
A nocturnal predator of small fishes and crustaceans, the sand bass spends the day hovering motionless under ledges and in caves.
